Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
